Paul Quintin of Groton, Massachusetts is “The Funky Junky.” He is a creator of imaginative and unique metal sculptures, many of which are made of “junk” metal – old cars and farming equipment, railroad spikes and other found objects. Some of his more delicate artworks are made from sheet copper – even the scraps are used to make unusual creatures of the mind!
The use of found objects often lends a familiarity that immediately engages the viewer – it is fun to recognize common objects such as nuts, bolts, nails, springs and saw blades that have been given new life and immortality in these works of art. “Funky Junky” themes include whimsical flowers, birds and bugs, imaginative and improbable creatures, thought-provoking and disturbing pieces, and sculptures that emote the darker side of the mind.
Paul has exhibited his sculptures in the Annual Regional Art Exhibit at the Fitchburg Art Museum in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. One of these, “Stony Adversary”, was voted “Most Popular” by its many fans who admired not only the overall impression of the piece, but also enjoyed searching for recognizable objects within the intricate framework. When Paul’s sculptures were exhibited at the Annual “Mass Morgue,” an evening of goth entertainment in Boston, the most admired one in particular was a grinning skull with a plant growing out of it.
Paul has no formal art training. He creates from within – following his own muse. The items he incorporates guide him and yield their souls to his remarkable imagination. The processes he incorporates include an initial idea, the search for, or chance finding of an object that “speaks” to him, the composition of elements according to some inner personal logic, welding the pieces together and refining the work as it progresses – adding touches that involve more heat, the addition of more items and cut metal pieces, and paint.
Some of Paul’s custom work has included lawn and garden ornaments, potted plants and a firewood holder made from an old wagon wheel. If you are looking for something unique for yourself, or as a gift for someone special, or if you have found a metal object that you would like to present in a certain way or incorporate into a work of art, contact Paul - he can create a utilitarian or purely decorative item incorporating your ideas or your found objects.
